Morning people. This week I bring you a restaurant review. Depending on a) how well it goes down b) how often I eat out, this may become a regular thing but we will see.
Anyway onto the review...
Ed's Diner, located on the ground floor of Selfridges Birmingham has been open for a few months now. I first discovered this place having awoken with a terrible hangover one Sunday morning. With the TV remote just out of arms reach I had no choice but to watch Man vs Food. I am going to work on the assumption that everyone is aware of this show and can appreciate that being hungover while watching a man gorge on a mountain of pulled pork makes the viewer rather hungry. Anyway I set off on an epic, Lord of the Rings style journey to town to enlighten myself as to Ed's Diner.
When you first arrive you will think you are in pulp fiction (nb I am yet to discover whether kicking off your shoes and dancing to your table is frowned upon or encouraged). The restaurant is kitted out like an old school American Diner: red boothed seating, milkshake machines everywhere and little jukeboxes on each table with some good old rock n roll.
The main draw of the menu is its range of burgers and hotdogs, my personal favourite is the chilli cheese burger with cheese fries...its a heavenly heart attack on a plate and rather messy! They also do a selection of chicken based dishes, salads and all day breakfasts. You get a lot of food for your money and considering its housed within Selfridges its actually reasonably priced in comparison to other burger restaurants of lesser quality.
Last night I sampled a shake for the first time. I opted for the peanut butter shake and it was a taste sensation! You get around 2 glasses from your shake but the extra price is definitely worth it. I would suggest not have a main course with a shake though as you come away rather full! I have noticed that Ed's have opened up a designated shake stand in the bull ring so if you are on the move and feel the urge for a butterscotch milkshake then all your dreams can now come true!
All in all Ed's Diner is the closest Birmingham has got to the American diner experience and with its relative value for money, as well as countless deals (students get 20% off during the week) its well worth a visit if your debating where to head to for a burger in town.
