Yo Sushi Review

As a lover of all things Japanese, I couldn’t resist visiting Yo Sushi! A quirky, perky restaurant that’s just popped up in the heart of Brindley Place in Birmingham. (I know there’s one in the Selfridges in the Bullring but my voucher from their website is only valid at Brindley place. I love money off vouchers!)

We were greeted by an over enthusiastic waiter who was ecstatic that I visited this restaurant once before. He lets us know how to order (which is quite simple, each colour bowl has its own price) He seats us at our little station on the conveyor belt and skips away to get the menus. He doesn’t literally skip; he was just too hyper for a normal human. We ordered some overpriced Coca Cola and tap water. Quite literally; there were two taps at your station, one sparkling and one triple filtered.

The food ordering system is basically, see food, take food from in front of you on the conveyor belt, and eat. If it’s not there, just holla at the chef (I have no idea why I put holla , ill leave it there to remind me not to be an idiot) and he/she will cook it for you there and then. It’s the fastest food I’ve seen. You may find yourself staring, hypnotised by the huge variety of dishes whizzing around you. Oh, the kitchen is in the middle of the restaurant so you can see what they really put in your special sauce.

If you need help you can push the help button which shouts funny Japanese sayings or says English phrases in a Japanese accent like ‘Hurry hurry table three now’. I think I annoyed the animated waiter slightly as I was so amused by the button, which got stuck the last time we pressed it so they had to poke it with a chop stick. Oh don’t even talk to me about chop sticks. My waiter offered me kiddie sticks as he saw me struggle, by struggle I mean I just stabbed at my chicken to pick it up.

You have menus with a picture of each tiny dish so you actually know what you’re trying. This didn’t work for me as I was tricked into eating salmon as I thought it was chicken wings. They are very generous with the different bowls of noodles and rice but not so with the actual sushi dishes. We tried nearly everything but the sushi, my tummy wasn’t brave enough. We even had some Dorayaki a Japanese tiny folded pancake dipped in sour raspberry sauce. Hijō ni oishii!! (Very yummy!!) I had a few too many bowls of that.

It has a really cool, laid back atmosphere and it attracted lots of young people and families. I heard a few Jason Mraz songs in the background too :) It’s a nice place to unwind and fill up!

It was very good at Yo Sushi. The food was really rich and delicious but that being said, you can’t eat too much as the different dishes are so full of flavour that it can make you feel a bit queasy. The noodles and rice dishes were very good at filling us up without emptying our purses. An average meal will cost £12-£17 per person including a drink and a desert!

DELICIOUS!
