Roller Derby..

A brutal - fast passed new sport that has recently been hip checking it way on to our shores is the hypnotic Roller Derby. Originally a male dominated sport but since it’s rise and fall from fame in the 1970’s , roller derby has found new popularity with female only leagues and it’s “alternative” dress and over all appearance.

So, how do you play this fascinating sport you may defiantly probably not be asking? Well… I don’t know, I’ve been to a few of my local team, Central City Rollergirls and all the time watching them I haven’t been able follow what has been going on. Not due to all the fast pasted action involved. its because, well…girls lots of girls, in sparkly short shorts and fish net stocking………Sorry lost my train of thought there….YES! Shorts! So ! Luckily for you (me) I picked up a program the last time I witnessed one of these epic displays of wheeled athleticism, which explains everything we need to know about Roller derby. Ahem.

“ two teams of five roller derby player skate around an oval track. Jammers get a 2-minute time period, called a jam when they can score points, which they do by passing members of the other team.

Pivots are at the front and wear striped helmets. Then blockers and at the back are the jammers who have helmets with stars on them.

The whistle blows and the pack sets off then the jammers follow on the second whistle. they have to go all the way round and get though the pack cleanly before they can start to score points.

First jammer through is the lead jammer and can call off the jam by touching her hands on her hips.

The teams try to get their jammers through and stop the other teams jammer getting past. The referee’s look out for penalties & foul play.

A game consist of two 30 minute periods.”
