LA NOIRE you have impressed me! A dark, dramatic, action packed, mysterious and clever game from the makers of GTA, filled with secrets, lies and lots of dead bodies clogging up the streets of LA? Woop woop this is a great game!
BUT, if you think it’s anything like GTA 4, I’m sorry but it’s not. No more shooting randoms and steeling their money, no more picking up ladies and no more stars and cop chases! Well durr you're are a cop now! It has some of the features of GTA but very little; the same on screen display and map layout, radios in cars but you can’t change the stations, same that’s about it.
As I 'borrowed' this game off my boyfriend, so I only had the weekend to play as Inspector Cole Phelps, an ex-war veteran who come back to LA as a rookie cop and, quite quickly, makes his way through up force.
But OMG it’s a great game! It’s a new type of game; its set out very nicely as a detective drama. Filled with good acting and at times you feel like you’re watching it more than playing. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The quality of the graphics is amazing. In order to read faces correctly; Rockstar Games has put a lot of detail into their face types and expressions. This is due to the MotionScan 3D technology as seen below:
It’s really helpful in interrogations. That’s a new aspect you have to get your head around. If handled correctly by asking the correct questions and backing them up with evidence you find, you can get the answers you want, if not you have to keep trying different sequences until you get it right. You have 3 options:
Truth- You believe them
Doubt- You think the person is lying, but have no proof
Lie- You know they're lying, and can prove it
Once you’ve chosen a sound will play; If the end of the chimes is high it's right, if it's low, it's wrong. Either way, Phelps will tick or cross the answers. It’s so tricky as you have to read their body language and as I haven’t studied Phycology, it slows down the game. I should watch ‘Lie to Me’ again for tips!
I dont mean to go on about the details in the faces, but wow, it's so life like, its creepy...
The cars are all 1940’s models. They look nice but they’re quite slow and bulky, it’s hard speed down roads and squeeze through a couple at 80mph on a packed road, I wrecked a few cars doing that.
Unfortunately that wasn’t enough to get the $47,000 in damage costs achievement. For that you need to crash up the rare cars you find around the city. Here’s a tip, you can custom mark them on the map and get you partner to drive you there. Lazy.
After 6hrs, I’ve got up to the Quarter Moon Murders, half way through disc 2 already. Boy that’s good as my total time is around 8hrs over the past week and I must say, I usually suck at games like this; I have all the GTA’S but I also have all the cheats. What am I trying to say? Well, it’s kinda easy; it’s a straight road, no real tricky parts. I did have to redo a few side cases but nothing too serious. At least with this game you’re forced to think for yourself and not succumb to cheats!
I do like the options menu. Its set out like a note book where all your notes, clues, locations etc are stored. If you have XBOX Live, you get some nice nifty features like 'Ask the Community' when interogating:see what other players have chosen.Doesnt really help though.Or you can go into the Social Club.
At least borrow it if your too tight to fork out £40, everyone whos everyone will have it! :)
'Show me your Smug face'
Here's a funny video from GamesFront showing the other side of Phelps....

I've heard good things and bad things about this game...
Also, when you doubt a suspect, the detective ends up shouting at them all of a sudden...
Strange.
is it like heavy rain , or can you go any where ?
Yeah you can go anywhere, do a few side tasks when they pop up but really you have to follow the story in sequence. You dont really have a choice. If you fail a task, you have to replay it until its done.
Its not like Heavy Rain though I dont think, that actually looks better. What you do won't really affect the game.If you mess up you just have to redo the case.
Heavy rain is mostly quick time events,
Where la noir plays much more like GTA,
And you can stop playing the story and just drive around solving street crime and responding to your police radio if you want.
