Student Money - Two Words You Don't Hear Often!

Hello Students!

You're at at good time now; you're near the end of your studies, you have chosen your university courses and you never have to hear the words ' PERSONAL STATEMENT' or 'UCAS APPLICATION' again *phew*...( I'm hoping you've sent off your completed UCAS by the 15th January cut-off!). Now here's the tricky bit, STUDENT FINANCE

Just how are you going to pay for university? I've heard everyone complaining that they "can't afford to go to university" or "I don't have the money to look after myself when I do go" .

Well I've researching this myself and frankly, everyone can go to university, there is so much help out there; you just need to know where to look!!

Firstly bookmark this site: DIRECT.GOV STUDENT FINANCE WEBSITE

For those who are a bit confused here's the basics:
  • Universities can now charge up to £9000 per year but don’t worry; you can take out a Tuition Loan to cover that! It is paid directly to your university and you only have to pay it back once you’re earning £21,000 per year. Even then, you only pay back in small instalments from your wages!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • You can  apply for a Maintenance Loan to help with the cost of living whilst at university each year. The maximum amount depends on whether you live at home or not, if you live or study in London or not or if you are going to spend a year studying overseas. It is paid directly into your bank account at the start of each term. You use it to help you pay for your life whilst at university. This includes things like: Student Accommodation, Travel, Food, Essentials and Uni Resources.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • You can also apply for a Maintenance Grant to help with the cost of living whilst at university each year; it is based on your household income so if you qualify, this doesn't need to be paid back, EVER.This is as well as your Maintenance Loan!!

Want to find out quickly what money you are entitled to?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Don't forget, most universities offer bursaries. These are non-repayable sums of money that  are given to you as a reward. They can be:

*Paid directly into your bank account
*Taken away from your overall tuition fee
or
*Taken away from your accommodation cost

Different universities have different types of bursaries so make sure you have a look! There are usually bursaries for students who: receive high grades at college, are part of a successfully sports team or for students who come from a disadvantage background.

If you would prefer to do a written application, here is the link for the forms to print out:

(I wish I did that... I was told by a Student Finance person on the phone that there are parts missing on the online form so I had to print and fill out the missing parts anyway!?!?!?!)
