Quantum conundrum

Its no secret that we here at Zombie Outbreak love the portal games, I think its safe to say that between us we have spoken about portal and portal related things in almost 30 articles. I don't know if it's the game play, the humour, or the style that draws the gaming community to it like a moth to a flame, but gamers of all types love it.

That said, this week I’m not going to talk about portal, I'm going to talk about the game that I have no problem in calling “My new portal”

Quantum conundrum is a first person puzzle-platformer, only instead of using a hand-held portal device to get to the exit of each room, this time you have the IDS device, a glove that lets you step into other dimensions to solve puzzles.

During the cause of the game you will have access to 4 dimensions, in addition to the vanilla normal dimension, other dimensions, like the fluffy dimension that has everything in the house becoming pink and fluffy... and 10 times lighter allowing you to pick up and move them. It's through some very cleaver and creative switching between them that puzzles start to make sense and quantum conundrum does an excellent job of making you feel like a genius every time you solve a puzzle without pulling your hair out in frustration when you can't.

Quantum conundrum also has a great sense of humour, you play the game as a 12 year old boy dumped on his mad scientist uncle doorstep, at the very start of the game an event causes your uncle to get trapped in a pocket dimension only able to communicate with you through the houses intercom, and like in portal with GLaDOS most of the games humour comes from his commentary about your progress and comments on the remains of his inventions scattered about the house.

Your uncles commentary is by no means the only humour in the game, portraits around the house alter slightly depending on the dimension you are in, that regular picture of you uncle changes to show him in a bunny costume when you enter the fluffy dimension or can show him dressed in full heavy metal outfit in the Heavy dimension. My favourite small touch in the game is the “Things you will never get to do” screens that show every time you die, for example, “"Thing #74 you will never get to experience: watching your favourite childhood TV shows get turned into terrible movies”

This game is fantastic and well worth your time to check out, I honestly don't know why its not getting the widespread appeal it deserves. While it's not portal, it has a lot of what made portal great about it, (this is probably due in no small part because its lead designer Kim Swift, formerly worked at Valve and was lead designer on portal...)

Its available on steam, Xbox live and Playstation network so you have no excuse to not give it a chance. I promise you won't be disappointed.
