Sounds that you listen to, with your earholes

So when I'm not watching 1980s puppet-politics-satire or instructing our customers how to turn their PC off and back on again while at work, I do actually like to listen to music.

Most folk who know me well enough know I'm predominantly into rock music, as the primal urge within me is to listen to crunching electric guitar riffs and raw vocals. I have, however, been known to settle for something a little more laid back- and hey, I have my guilty pleasures, too.

So, below is a list of my favourite songs at the moment. Give them a listen, you might find yourself musically educated (or with bleeding ears, alternatively).

Breaking Benjamin - "The Diary of Jane"

One of my favourite songs from my favourite band, "The Diary of Jane" is a song about- well, just that really. As per usual for Breaking Benjamin's main writer, front-man Benjamin Burnley, the lyrics don't seem to mean a whole hill of beans, and rather they allude to a Kurt Cobain-inspired, alcohol-fuelled writing session. Heavy riffs, killer drums and an awesome, powerful voice, it's what I enjoy most about music in one ultimately-pleasing song.

The Servant - "Cells"

Allegedly a/the theme song to Sin City (I wouldn't know, I've never seen it), I'm not sure what gets me about this song. Normally similar vocalists would have me clawing my ears from my head, for a start- but it works in this song. The lyrics aren't great, but the guitarists get some great noises coming from their instruments, and I've always been a sucker for electronic, synthesized effects, such as in the beginning of the track. What's this song about? Beats me. Man, I'm not a great analyst am I?

Five Finger Death Punch - "Bad Company"

Big thanks to my old man here, for introducing me to perhaps one of the single-most badass songs I've ever heard in my life. The singer's voice is beefy and powerful and simply awesome, and the song generally melts faces with its wicked guitars and busts guts with its drumming. Ignore the video- its seems to be something gung-ho relating to soldiers. Hm.

Superhero - "El Nino State"

Ever heard of Superhero? Nah, don't expect you to have done either. Superhero are a band I discovered at a local rock concert called Rock the Cathedral, held at Worcester Cathedral. They are a Christian band, but this song (and most of the album it comes from) are not particularly religious. It's simply a joy to listen to, very simply but very affective, with delicate use of a twinkling guitar riff throughout which ties it all together. Not the best version of this song, but you try and find a video on youtube for it!

Breaking Benjamin - Give Me a Sign

Coming somewhat full circle again with another Breaking Benjamin song from the Dear Agony album, Give Me a Sign is more of a ballad of sorts, where Ben's voice really shines. It's thought that the song relates to some of his own troubles in his life at the moment, relating particularly to his ill health. They're on hiatus as a result at the moment, actually. I hope he recover soon so I can have another new album from them...

Well, there's a few I have for you now. I hope to post in with a few more every now and then- lemme know what you think.
