New Trend: Steampunk

STEAMPUNK

Imagine today’s world but with Victorian aesthetic. All the technology we have invented over time still exists, but they do not run by electricity… they are powered by steam! Cogs, gears, and all kinds of steam powered goodness come together to create this 19th century, sci-fi fantasy world.

From what i've learnt , Steam Punk is a subgenre of sci-fi and speculative fiction. It mainly focuses on an ‘alternative history’ how the world could have been. It also has a mixture of adventure, pirates, monsters and really anything to do with fantasy.

Wars are won ,with gadgets and gizmos.... as well as Victorian charm!

Its popularity is on the rise thanks to sci-fi and fantasy novels such as Lia Habel’s range of novels including her new book coming out in October - Dearly, Departed: A cyber-Victorian/steampunk romance – with zombies as well. It is also the theme in Wild Wild West starring Will Smith. Although it is a terrible movie, the Steam Punk elements are beautiful.

Even BioShock and the newer Doctor Who has some elements of Steampunk.

The Women & Men of Steampunk - My opinion

Steampunk Women - usually dressed in tightly laced corsets, elegant Victorian gowns, petticoats and little brown boots but don’t let that fool you, they also adventurous, full of courage and have a few guns tucked away in their bloomers! Steam Punk women don’t follow rules, they break them. They’re spies, romantics, artists and adventurers.

Steampunk Men - usually in their top hats and waist coats, are inventors, constantly making and improving gadgets, tinkering away with brass, clogs, clock gears anything that can make anything else. They enjoy making new, ingenious items. Guns aren’t just guns anymore; they have all sorts of attachments and improvements.

A variety of people are involved in the Steampunk movement: Authors, artists, inventors, actors as well as everyday people. Your doctor, teacher or postman could be a Steam Punk fanatic! Inspiration for steampunk can come from a variety of places: comics, gadgets, cosplay, movies, costumes and vintage fashion.

Big Events such as The Steam Punk World Fair in New Jersey are hosted yearly attracting many participants from around the world.

Often, they have a catwalk section where Steampunk enthusiasts can show off their costumes, weaponry and gadgets. Children are referred to as ‘Coglins’ and are welcomed to these events where they have mini steampunk activities too.

On their last event, activities included:
* Absinthe Tasting
* The Mad Tea Party
* Dinner at The Chuckwagon Saloon
* The Gaslamp Cabaret: Open Bar tickets (21+!)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ultimately there are no guidelines to Steam Punk. Many people have different ideas on what steampunk is based on their favourite parts of it. You could just show up to an event in your normal attire with a passion for it and still fit in with the elaborate costume wearers who love to talk like a ‘Professor’ or ‘Madame’. It is Steam punk etiquette to welcome everyone.

Steampunk allows people to be creative by designing Victorian outfits, tinkering with gadgets, writing novels and acting like your favourite historical characters. It's also a very social group with members all around the world!
