Scary moments in scary games - the perfect Halloween post!

OBLIGATORY HALLOWEEN STYLE POST TIME!

Last week I did scary movies, now I’m doing scary games. Specifically, the scariest moments in the scariest games. Enjoy, why don’t you?

Resident Evil 1 – In dire need of obedience school

(Sorry, I couldn't find a non sweary version).

If I were a lazy (er) writer, I would have just written, ‘THE VOICE ACTING, LOL’ and left it at that. But no, I am a woman of integrity, so I have picked out of the scariest moments from the Resident Evil series.

This scene happens fairly early on, after your party splits up to search for the missing member (Jill or Chris, depending on who you’re playing as). You walk down a rather dull corridor until... CRASH! Zombie dogs are smashing their way through the windows to chomp on your tasty flesh. Argh!

Ok, so it’s not the most sophisticated of scares. Tell me you didn’t jump out of your bloody skin the first time you played though. Dare you.

Bioshock – A real reason to fear the dentist

The original Bioshock was full of creepy, unsettling moments that had you on the edge of your seat the whole way through, but none were quite as disturbing as this.

As you work your way through the medical pavilion, you happen upon a deserted dental surgery. As you walk in steam billows everywhere, and in the previously vacant dentist’s chair there’s now a dead splicer. Brr. The scariest bit though, comes when you investigate a tonic on a nearby desk. Suddenly there’s more steam, and when you turn around OH MY GOD IT’S THE DENTIST AND HE’S RIGHT BEHIND YOU!

Sweet dreams.

Tomb Raider – The chompy lizard that shouldn’t be

Tomb Raider? In a scary game list? Have I gone wrong?

Nope. Anyone who played the original game back in 1996 will remember that moment in the Lost Valley, just after you’ve taken down a couple of raptors and already are thinking ‘wtf?’, when the ground starts shaking and AN ENORMOUS T REX IS STOMPING TOWARDS YOU READY TO EAT YOU UP!

I mean, come on, that’s scary. It’s bigger than you! And it has loads of pointy teeth!

Oh alright, please yourselves.

Silent Hill – Disney World gone wrong

Again, I could have been lazy and yelled ‘ALL OF IT IS SCARY’ and knocked off early for lunch, but again, I am a consummate professional. Instead, I have picked out the haunted house scene from Silent Hill 3.

After wandering through a demented fairground, finding a load of bunny outfits smeared with blood, and fighting your demonic other self on a freaky carousel (or did that happen after? I can’t remember, what a handy excuse to replay it!), you find yourself in a creepy, Disney style Haunted Mansion. The queue line even has the fake headstones.

You step inside and a Vincent Price sound-alike guides you through the house, taking in the sights. Is that blood on the wall real, or just part of the attraction? That body hanging from the ceiling isn’t real, is it? And... oh God! Run!

Condemned – Totally not following you

Ok, I admit it, I haven’t played Condemned. I’ve had the sequel sat on my shelf forever but I think I’m going to get around to playing it after seeing this.

So, you’re walking through the mall when you walk past these mannequins in a smashed up shop window. They’re a bit creepy looking, but you carry on. Look behind you. Are they following you? No, surely not... look again. There they are. Staring at you. In you end you jump through a hole in the floor in a bid to get away. They’re circled around it, staring in at you. HOW ARE THEY DOING THAT?

If you’ll excuse me, I think I need to go find my mum.

Yes, I admit, I jumped at the dogs in Resident Evil! I was young at the time though, that's my excuse...

And the Silent Hill haunted house is rather creepy....
