So, if you browse The Guardian, The Times, or The Sun, you may well have heard about something called UK PonyCon, a convention of My Little Pony lovers descending on the East Midlands Novotel a couple of weeks ago. Hundreds of men, women and children came to meet others who love the candy coloured horses, and of course add to their ever growing herds. I, in fact, was one of them. I’d taken the day off work, saved up a big chunk of cash, and driven up for the event. I was so excited to meet others into the toys for the first time, to make some friends and have fun for two days. Imagine my surprise when I was shown the Guardian article on Saturday morning, which said I was a weird, emotionally stunted oddball for doing so.
Ok, it didn’t actually say that, but it certainly implied it. I saw the photographers milling around while at the con, but I more or less avoided them. Others, I learned later on the PonyCon forums, weren’t so lucky. Some have bemoaned the fact that they were made out to be simple minded, having their comments dramatically chopped down and rearranged to suit the writer’s needs. Soon we had come to realise that the writers had obviously come to the event with their pieces already written in their minds.
This, of course, is shockingly sloppy journalism, but it’s not a one off occurrence. Time and again we have seen pieces appear in the tabloids with almost a complete absence of facts involved. If you learn to read between the lines, it’s not a problem. The problem is that these journalists forget that the soundbites they collect are attributed to real people, people with feelings. The people I’d met at PonyCon were genuinely lovely and friendly, and would fall over themselves to help you out or make you feel at home. To take that trust and do this to them is nothing short of cruel.
Even worse is what happened to the male fans, the ‘Bronies’ (guys who discovered My Little Pony thanks to the newly revived cartoon). Two seemed to get the most flack, made out to be strange and a little bit creepy for their interest in what is a traditionally ‘girly’ cartoon. The Guardian declares ‘Men in tiaras join UK’s biggest My Little Pony fans’, but it’s almost a complete falsehood. There was one man wearing a MLP headband, because he’d won it in a game of Pinch the Parcel earlier in the day. The Sun claims that they had come to drink and cause trouble, which is, as far as I’m aware, an outright fabrication.
This, quite frankly, is outright sexism. Every Brony I met was fantastic, but to read the papers you’d think they were dangerous weirdoes. If this criticism were aimed at the women attending, there’d be complete outrage. How is it ok to smear these men’s names like this?
At the end of the day, there isn’t much we can do. We can write in and complain about how we were represented, but we will be written off as whining oddballs who need to grow up. The way the papers see it, they went to go and investigate a puff piece, something they can slide in between the horrors of the world that they are reporting on and say, ‘Look at these freaks! You’re ok because you’re normal. Don’t you feel better about yourself?’ The sad truth is that the readers lap it up. If you don’t believe me, just check out the comments on those articles. According to them I must be stupid, single (like that’s a failing), jobless (ditto) and just ridiculous.
I know I’m ok, so I can rise above it. This kind of biased reporting is not ok though, even on ‘lighthearted’ pieces like these. It doesn’t matter who you speak to, if you mis-represent them you’re causing them more distress than you realise.

Oh Help Me... It happened!
So, I've been watching My Little Pony 'Friendship is Magic'... *sigh*
I wanted to know what the internet was going on about... EVERYONE was going on about My Little Pony, and I just had to know! And now.... Well I just can't stop watching it...
It's mainly because of this song that I've become obsessed with My Little Pony... So I ask you...
WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE PONY? BECAUSE I CAN'T CHOOSE!
p/s: I was shocked to see the My Little Pony tag exists... SO! I want answers people!

You've forgotten the glitter
If you’ve been reading us since the beginning (i.e. last year), you might remember that I did a post about three yonks ago about all the crazy pony stuff you can find on Etsy. There is something about the combination of arts and crafts and candy coloured ponies that brings out everyone’s inner nutjob.
Well, kiddlywinks, I’m doing it again, because why not?

Have you heard that saying that’s going round the internet lately? It goes, ‘I never thought I’d see the day that ponies were manlier than vampires.’
Well, not this one.
Seriously, put the effort in! You may as well have scrawled ‘I HEART EDWARD CULLEN’ on your pencil case and whacked that up for sale. Prfft.
How’s this going to help your iPhone reception?

Ok, yeah, it’s ‘kitsch’ and ‘retro’ and whatever, but how are you actually going to hold your phone with a sodding pony glued to the back of it?
So many questions

Ok, look, it’s very well made, I’ll give it that. But OH MY GOD LOOK AT IT’S FACE. LOOK AT IT. It’s going to be watching me while I sleep, I just know it. Holding a kitchen knife over my head.

I’ve done zombie ponies before, but this is just... icky. Exposed bone! Yeuch.

'Dear future glue sticks...'
This week I'm going to walk you through my experience of one of the latest games I've got my grubby mitts on. What is it, you ask? Well, behold:
OH GOD, THEY LOOK LIKE THEY'RE DEAD INSIDE.
Yes, for the princely sum of £1.99 (or 1p used) on Amazon, you too can own a copy of My Little Pony: Best Friends Ball. Would you want to? Well, it depends on how much you value your eyeballs.
It came in the post and I eagerly ripped it open and put it in my laptop, ready for candy colored equine goodness. So it starts up, and...
WHAT'S WRONG WITH IT? FETCH THE SHOTGUN!
Yeah, Rainbow Dash is leaping around the screen banging on about a party and calling everyone 'darling'. Ugh. Ok, let's get going:
'Pick one'. Ok, do they have different magic powers? Is one an expert in weaponry? Oh, they're just different colours. Ok, then, sod it, I'll be Pinkie Pie. OH GOD SHE SOUNDS LIKE SHE HAD A LOBOTOMY.
Then I'm taken to my house in Ponyville, which... I'm not sure what the purpose of it is, actually, apart from a base to send invitations to this ball thing. I decided to decorate it in the most clashing way possible, as protest.
Oh yeah, the invites. I decided to choose the most pathetic message possible, and then covered it in stickers so it looked like Lisa Frank threw up on a Barbie doll. Shame you couldn't write your own message. 'Dear future glue sticks, please come to my party or I'll kill a puppy.'
Right, off out for a stroll then. You can only move left or right, and when you meet another pony, that pony stands stock still and only their mouth moves, like a rudimentary puppet. It is very, very disturbing.
That is, until I accidentally clicked on a bush and that pony popped out, giggling 'tee hee, I'm hiding!' AAAARGGHH! What else is hiding in the scenery? Killer butterflies? Bunny rabbits wielding axes? Eep.
So I went into the cake baker's house, to, you know, make a cake. Then that happened. OH GOD, IT'S GOING TO EAT ME WHOLE.
Worth noting: When baking a cake, you can put mushrooms in it. THIS. EXPLAINS. EVERYTHING.
Given an opportunity such as this, usually I opt to write graphic swearwords, but I restrained myself this time.
DRESS UP TIME! I think my top hat is rather spiffing. It goes well with my tutu, at any rate.
So I wander up to the castle and no one's decorated it for the ball yet! What's going on here? Do none of these ponies have jobs to do?! I created a pony conga line in protest, and that's when my eyeballs started to bleed.
So should you play My Little Pony: Best Friends Ball? Well, it's cheaper than laser eye surgery.

Emails and Ponies!
Did you know Zombie outbreak has an email address?
Its true, you can find it at
outbreakofzombies@gmail.com.
Well, since I've set that email address up, I've had a grand total of... 3 emails...
You should all change that by sending me emails, I read them all, and if you want to email a specific Zombie Outbreak author I'll forward the emails to them.
BUT I've decided to answer all the emails I've gotten so far here, in this post. (names and details removed for privacy reasons)
Hey there,
I read on your Myspace that you own zombieoutbreak.com and I was wondering if you were interested in selling it for a reasonable price.
I plan to use the domain name for a PHP/2D based zombie game I'm making and 'Zombie Outbreak'
sounds like a cool name for it. (Mind you this is for a personal use and not for professional/business use)

I understand that you are doing something with the name, but I believe that I can put the domain to a much better use.
Before I talk about this, full disclosure, I replied and asked what a “reasonable price” for www.zombieoutbreak.com was, (hey, if he had offered me a million quid I might have taken the money and run) this is the reply I got.
Heh, now that I think about it reasonable can be interpreted in many ways...
I don't know how much you want for it, But I was thinking $50 is a reasonable amount, why don't you consider it, and reply with a counter offer.
Ok, I've considered it.
Get stuffed.
First off, if I was to take your offer, $50 is about £30, that's about £4.30 for each of the 7 authors of Zombieoutbreak. Now I don't want to talk for them, but I don't think they would be happy about all the hard work they have put into the site being reduced to £4.30.

| Note, This is actually more money that we would each get from the sale of the site. |
BUT by far the most important question here, is who on earth still uses Myspace? Where exactly on myspace is this email listed along with the details that it belongs to the owner of zombieoutbreak.com? If anyone knows, take a screen shot and email it to me, I'll do you some kind of drawing as a reward.
The second email I got was a question I've been asked a bunch in real life also, so its worth answering here.
Hey
I like the site, but why is it called Zombie Outbreak? You hardly ever talk about zombies, why not change the name to something more fitting?
Well, the simple answer is, The name is fun and easy to remember, true we don't write about zombies on a daily basis, but the site does have an overall “zombie” theme to it. We like to think, that without us, you would become a Zombie from the dullness of everyday life, and in our own way our posts help to combat that.

But to waylay that question in future, I'm working on a “Monday Richard's Guide to surviving the Zombie Outbreak” page to be put up on the site, so the visitors we get looking for help in the upcoming Zombie apocalypse won't leave the site disappointed.
And so, onto the last email I got, (and the only one directed to me Monday Richard, Directed)
Dear Monday Richard
The site is so cool, I found the site when searching for information about Harold Camping's predictions that the world is going to end, but I stuck around thanks to your mini reviews and rhyming posts! You should do more rhyming posts maybe get the Sunday guy to sing them lol!
Anyway, the question I wanted to ask, is how do you do the drawings on the site? Like the site logo and the cool drawings on the end of some of your posts?!?
They remind me of the new My little Pony cartoon! (you should so draw a zombie outbreak pony lol)
Well, I have to say that this email really brightened my day! no one ever comments on the art style I picked for Zombie Outbreak, not even my fellow authors (unless I bug Tuesday Shanice into telling me what she thinks of them) so to have it noticed and liked really made my day, I spend a bunch of time on every picture and now I know at least one person likes them!
I draw pretty much all the art for the site In vector format, normally using Macromedia Flash (A really old version of what is now Adobe Flash), its really an animation tool, but I find it really works with my style of drawing, then when an image is completed, I export it into photo shop for final touch up and saving into a format the web can handle.
If enough people are interested I can do a step by step post in the future showing exactly how a Monday Richard drawing goes together, leave a comment or email me if that's something your interested in.
Also, I went ahead and took your suggestion, here I give you the first official Zombie Outbreak My little Pony,
I call her “Tasty brains”
Drawing this pony had an unexpected side effect, up to this point I had never watched an episode of My little pony friendship is magic, I know all about the “Bronies” (The men in my age bracket that have fallen in love with My Little pony) but I have never counted myself among them.
My only real exposure to my little Ponys was Staying in Friday Voni's spare room and having her collection watch me while I sleep...
But as research for that picture I went ahead and watched the first two episodes. Then after finishing the picture, I went ahead and watched the rest of the first season...
I have to say I was surprised at myself. I don't know if its the animation style, the sense of humour or the nice little lessons about friendship behind each episode but I enjoyed every moment of it. If that makes me a Brony, then a Brony I'm proud to be!
Friendship is magic! Don't believe me? Go watch it for yourself.
Then email me I might do another “mailbag” type episode in the future, and if you send me ideas for things you want me to draw, I'll do my best to acquiesce to your request.
